Chapter 1 Operations and productivity
1 ) Why should new research operations management?
We examine OM pertaining to four causes. We examine how people organize themselves for effective enterprise. All of us study OM because we would like to know how services and goods are developed. We study OM to know what functions managers carry out. We examine OM since it is such a costly part of a company. Productivity can be measured in lots of ways, such as simply by labor, capital, energy, materials usage, etc. At Contemporary Lumber, Inc., Art Binley, president and producer of apple crates sold to farmers, has been able, with his current equipment, to generate 240 closets full per 75 logs. This individual currently acquisitions 100 logs per day, and each log needs 3 labor-hours to method. He feels that they can hire a specialist buyer who can buy a better-quality log at the same cost. If this is the case, he can boost his creation to 260 crates every 100 wood logs. His labor-hours will increase by 8 hours per day. And what will be the impact on output (measured in crates per labor-hour) if the buyer is hired? (a) Current labor productivity 240 crates/ 100 logs X 3 hours/log 240/300=. almost 8 crates every labor -hour= 240
(b)Labor productivity with buyer = 260 crates/(100 logs Times 3 hours/log) + eight hours =260/308=. 844 milk crates per labor-hour
(0. 844-0. 8)0. 8X100= 3. 52
Using current productivity (. 80 from [a]) being a base, the rise will be a few. 5% (. 844/. almost eight = 1 . 055, or maybe a 5. 5% increase).
