_Myths of the Spanish Conquest_ is usually broken in to seven chapters, each focused on a different fable or mis-conception regarding the Spanish conquest. In debunking these types of myths, Matt Restall works together three themes regarding the conquest. First, the fact that European breakthrough discovery of the Americas was one of the best events in human history. Second, that the cure was the achievement of " a few great men, " which in turn he eventually describes as " a number of adventurers. " These two themes lead to a third theme, or perhaps question. " If history's greatest function - the European finding and cure of the Unites states - was achieved by merely a " handful of adventurers, " how performed they do that? "

A single common solution to this question is, " because these people were exceptionally wonderful men. " The " theory of exceptional men" paints the most well known of the Spaniards - Columbus and Educado - while " bigger than life character types, " who also " still enjoy remarkable name identification almost a half a millennium after their very own deaths. This theory credit the courage, audacity and brilliance of each man as reasons for success in the two reaching the Americas and overcoming the Mexica, respectively.
